Red Gardens

November 2023, Austin, TX
this image shows the same red garden one year later

The Texas Mountain Laurel is my favorite tree, and it produces my favorite material ever... its fire bean seed.
These seeds are harder than concrete, and can lie dormant for a decade before choosing to take root. Their germination is somewhat of a mystery, and I have been exploring it through the installment of red gardens.
The first one I did was at the base of an oak tree that is beginning to die. My hope is that by the time she moves on, a strong young mountain laurel will take her place. And the beat goes on...

I have intallted 3 red gardens throughout austin now, all the seeds were collected by hand .
